Towards the end of 2010, my friend Kathy told me about an idea she had. She wanted to find a way to help raise money for a charity that was involved in finding treatments and a cure for her mother's disease, psoriatic arthritis.  More importantly she wanted to do something that showed her mom how much she cared about her - read more about Kathy and her mom at her blog - 11, 12, 13 Challenge

As soon as Kathy told me about the challenge, I thought it was a fantastic idea and I immediately wanted to see if there was any way I could be involved and help her with the challenge.  She graciously told me that part of the challenge was to encourage other people to run as well.  I jumped at the chance to do that.  Kathy's mom is a wonderful, caring woman.  Her strength in the face of this disease has been nothing short of incredible.  In fact, it was not until more recently I became aware how progressed her psoriatic arthritis is, as she handles it with a strength and grace that cannot be put into words.  It is because of this that made me want to get up off the sofa and show her that I am behind her in her fight and that I believe in her.

I cannot imagine how I would react if a member of my own family faced a life altering disease, but Kathy's love and devotion to her family in creating and following through with the Challenge is inspiring.

The challenge is also intended to help any family that might face the battle of psoriatic arthritis.  The money raised is intended to go to research to help find better detection techniques, treatments and maybe one day a cure so that other families don't have face the hardships of this disease.

Kathy's dad has generously agreed to match all donations up to $13,100, meaning that if we hit that mark the donations will total $26,200.  Although this is the goal, we hope that we can exceed this figure as it is merely a benchmark rather than a ceiling.

All support in this challenge is appreciated, emotional and financial.  Whether you can donate money or moral support, we will be out there taking on this challenge just like her mother is going to win her fight with psoriatic arthritis - one step at a time.
